Renowned billionaire investor Warren Buffett has expressed keen interest in exploring investment opportunities in India, citing the presence of untapped potential in the country’s market. Speaking at Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting on Friday, Buffett acknowledged the high growth potential of the Indian economy, the fifth-largest in the world. Responding to a query from Rajeev Agarwal of DoorDarshi Advisors, a US-based hedge fund focusing on Indian equities, Buffett highlighted the possibility of future ventures in India.
He also highlighted the sector where he sees great opportunity. Buffett said the question is if Berkshire has some kind of advantage in pursuing those unattended opportunities, particularly against people who are managing other people’s money and getting paid based on assets.
“There may be unexplored or overlooked opportunities in India, but these are likely to be explored in the future,” Buffett remarked during the meeting. Buffett, known for his pragmatic investment strategies, pondered the prospect of Berkshire Hathaway delving into the Indian market, emphasizing the need for a competitive edge.
“It is a very pertinent question. I believe there are numerous opportunities in countries like India,” Buffett commented. “However, the crux lies in whether Berkshire possesses any distinctive advantages or insights into Indian businesses, or if we have the necessary contacts to facilitate transactions.”
The seasoned investor underscored the importance of adept management within Berkshire Hathaway to effectively navigate potential opportunities in India. “The question remains whether our management team possesses the vigor and acumen to pursue these opportunities,” Buffett added.
India, with its burgeoning economy and diverse business landscape, holds promise for investors seeking growth prospects. Buffett’s remarks signal a keen interest in exploring the Indian market’s untapped potential.
Buffett, 93, said Berkshire has a great reputation around the world. He said, his Japanese experience has been fascinating enough. During a Question and Answer session, Mr Buffett answered several questions related to some of the key investment decisions taken by Berkshire Hathway lately.
Decidedly reducing stake in Apple was one of the key topics. Mr Buffett clarified that it had nothing to do with the long-term view on the stock and Apple will probably remain one of their largest holdings despite the recent slowdown. He also told shareholders that Vice Chairmen Greg Abel and Ajit Jain have proven themselves the right people to lead Berkshire after he departs.
