Wales must open Principality Stadium roof for every match this autumn

Asia's Tech News Daily

The Principality Stadium roof will be open for all of Wales’ autumn internationals due to Covid.

With rain forecast for Saturday’s clash with New Zealand, the conditions are now set to have a significant impact on the game.

In the past, there have been a succession of “roof rows”, with opposing teams disagreeing on whether the retractable cover should be employed or not.

In the Six Nations, the default position – under tournament rules – has been for the roof to be open unless both sides agree to it being closed.

It is a different situation in the autumn internationals, where the decision rests purely with the host nation, Wales.

But this time around, there is no discussion and no debate to be had.

Due to Covid considerations, in terms of reducing the risk of transmission of the virus amid a 70,000-plus crowd, the autumn games will all be played in the open air.

So that will apply to the fixtures against the All Blacks, South Africa, Fiji and Australia.

Wales coach Wayne Pivac confirmed as much when quizzed on the subject at his team announcement press conference on Thursday.

“Because of Covid, there is no option,” he said.

“It’s open for the whole competition.”

Wales have generally always preferred the roof closed to generate more atmosphere.
