A Perth man has been charged after allegedly trying to import about 5kg of meth hidden inside a package from the US labelled “documents”.

Australian Border Force officers on August 4 allegedly intercepted a box that had multiple A4 envelopes inside, with 21 of them containing the drug hidden between sheets of paper.

Australian Federal Police removed the drugs, then delivered the package as planned to a home in Mirrabooka on Tuesday.

A 62-year-old man allegedly opened the package and when a search warrant was later executed, police allegedly found contents from the consignment inside a black bag in the hallway.

Police further allege a fictitious name was used for the delivery to try to avoid detection.

The man is scheduled to face Perth Magistrates Court later on Wednesday, charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug and attempting to possess a commercial quantity of meth.

If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Investigations are continuing into the involvement of anyone else in the alleged crime.

AFP Detective Acting Inspector Tim Knight said the meth had an estimated street value of about $5m.

“Organised crime networks see Australia as a lucrative market because of the high demand for drugs and the high prices users will pay, with West Australians charged and willing to pay some of the highest prices,” he said.

“The money wasted on illicit drugs lines the pockets of criminals and helps to fuel a violent and exploitative international industry.
