Rahul appears in Sultanpur court, gets bail in defamation case

The MP- MLA court on Tuesday gave relief to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who appeared here in connection with a case of making objectionable remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Karnataka in 2018.

The court has approved his bail with two sureties of Rs 25,000 each.

On Monday, a surrender and bail application was filed in the court on behalf of his lawyer.

Special Judge Yogesh Kumar Yadav heard the counsels and granted bail to the Congress leader.

Earlier, Gandhi reached the court by road at 10:20 am after landing by helicopter at Amhat airstrip.

Vijay Mishra, former president of District Cooperative Bank, resident of Hanumanganj of Kotwali Dehat police station, had filed a complaint in the court against Gandhi on August 4, 2018.

Mishra has alleged that on July 15, 2018, Congress leader Gandhi had made objectionable remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Karnataka’s capital Bengaluru and his sentiments were hurt by those comments.

Complainant’s advocate Santosh Pandey said that after recording the statements of the complainant and other witnesses, the court had ordered to summon Rahul Gandhi on November 27, 2023.

On Monday, Gandhi’s advocate K P Shukla, along with the surrender and bail application, filed an application saying that Gandhi would be unable to appear in the court due to his participation in the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

After getting bail, Gandhi left for Rae Bareli to join the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.
