Despite already cruising in the DStv Premiership, Sundowns were the most active side in the January window. The Brazilians already had a nine-point gap on second placed Cape Town City, with three games in hand at the time. That did not stop them from pursuing a squad boost ahead of the second half of the season. Of course for them, they also have to factor continental commitments with hopes of a Club FIFA World Cup too.

Now with that on the horizon, Sundowns went and signed the Likes of Zukho Mdunyelwa, Matias Esquivel. Then when everybody thought that they had strengthened enough, they add Thembinkosi Lorch and Tashreeq Matthews. It was the signing of a talisman from their rivals, Pirates, which garnered the most headlines. As if that was not enough, they have also signalled intent to beat Chiefs and Pirates to Elias Mokwana and Tshepang Moremi. But where they could hurt them the most, is through their rumoured pursuit of Shandre Campbell.

Campbell has been a bright spark for SuperSport United in his breakthrough season, having seven goal contributions in 18 appearances. His early form was rumoured to have attracted interest from Chiefs and Pirates, but with SuperSport preferring to send him abroad. Now according to Soccer-Laduma Sundowns have since entered the fray.
Sundowns to beat Chiefs and Pirates to Campbell?
“Mamelodi Sundowns are understood to be monitoring SuperSport United attacker Shandre Campbell, with a move not being ruled out. The Siya crew has been led to believe that the former DStv Diski Challenge star has attracted interest. Matsatsantsa though are looking at the possibility of sending him to Europe. Their Tshwane rivals, however, have proved that they have the financial muscle, having done so with Thapelo Maseko before the start of this season, and they will test SuperSport’s resolve. The Brazilians are understood to be looking at the fact that Campbell is a young player who can make an impact at the club and possibly even go overseas after that” wrote the publication.

Should Sundowns go on to secure yet another top talent, it could spell curtains for Chiefs and Pirates. At least, if either one of them secures Campbell’s signing, it could make for a promising scenario.
