Vic adds rules for international arrivals

Victoria will send all international arrivals into home quarantine for 72 hours, with more stringent rules for those who've been in southern Africa, as the state responds to the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

No cases of Omicron have been reported in Victoria but the state's acting chief health officer, Deborah Friedman, says precautionary measures are necessary to protect Victorians.

New arrivals to the state who have recently been in one of nine southern African countries must now quarantine in a hotel for 14 days, under federal government rules.

Those countries are Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, The Seychelles, and Zimbabwe.

Anyone already in Victoria who's been to those countries in the past 14 days must also be tested and isolate for two weeks.

Victoria's health department says there is only a “very small” number of people in that category.

The three-day home quarantine requirement for international arrivals is in line with changes announced by NSW and the ACT overnight.

The Victorian government is warning the orders may be extended after review.

“These changes are safe and proportionate measures we can take to protect Victorians from the new Omicron COVID-19 variant of concern, while still allowing overseas travellers to come into Victoria,” Dr Friedman said in a statement on Saturday evening.

“We'll will continue to work with the Commonwealth government and state and territory colleagues to better understand the potential implications for this new variant and which actions are required to keep Australians protected.”

Victoria recorded 1252 COVID-19 cases and five deaths from the virus on Saturday.

The new infections in Victoria bring the total number of active cases in the state to 11,257.

The five deaths, of people aged in their 50s, 70s and 80s, bring the toll from the pandemic to 1318.

There are 299 Victorians battling the virus in hospital, bringing the seven-day average down to 301, including 90 in intensive care and 22 on a ventilator.
