Max Verstappen just had to tolerate his rival Lewis Hamilton in the first free practice for the Grand Prix of Saudi Arabia. At the introduction to the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, Verstappen clocked the second time. Hamilton came to 1.29.786, Verstappen was 0.056 seconds slower.

Verstappen went full speed in his first laps and was the fastest driver for a long time. He was overtaken by Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas halfway through practice. Verstappen was still faster than Bottas in the remainder, but he was unable to dive under Hamilton’s fastest lap.

Verstappen’s teammate, Sergio Pérez, set the 11th fastest time in the first practice session. Pierre Gasly of AlphaTauri had a pleasant introduction to the circuit and clocked the fourth fastest time. Antonio Giovinazzi was also strong, on behalf of Alfa Romeo Racing, finishing fifth on the fast track, where the drivers were able to accelerate. Several drivers showed that they liked the circuit.

The second free practice will follow later on Friday. The third free practice and qualifying are scheduled for Saturday. The race is on Sunday at 6:30 PM.

Verstappen defends an 8-point lead over Hamilton in Jeddah. The Dutchman may already take the world title on Sunday.

The Saudi Arabia Grand Prix is new on the racing calendar. The circuit was billed as “the fastest street circuit on the Formula 1 calendar”.
