Verstappen fends off Hamilton’s attack and ends in a title fight after a blistering apotheosis formula 1

US GPThe American GP turned out to be a kind of mini version of the current World Cup. Varying opportunities, minute differences and the venom in the tail, as this thriller has of course fascinated for months. With Max Verstappen as the smartest and the fastest, but it didn’t matter.

By Arjan Schouten

He in 2.16 meters tall. Experienced everything. But even an attentive spectator Shaquille O’Neal found the end of the American GP thrillingly exciting. The American fans who had not seen much of this dazzling Formula 1 season because of the time difference, immediately received the full package in their own Texas. A kind of live performance of a Drive to Survive episode, which can be done on Netflix without editing. This race could not have been more symbolic of this exciting world championship.

Like a yo-yo it went up and down 56 laps with the chances for the two title contenders. Exactly as it has been for months, wherever they fight the asphalt in the world. Verstappen started on pole, Hamilton immediately passed it at the top of the first corner. Verstappen passed it again after a successful undercut, with daring strategy in the pit lane. Hamilton back in front at Verstappen’s second early tire stop. And the Limburger passed it again with 18 laps to go at the end of the race, when Hamilton also switched to new hard tires.

Watch how Verstappen parried the British attack in the final lap

For example, the first American GP in two years turned into a Texas thriller in the final rounds, where this World Cup will also remain exciting until the end. In it, Hamilton came within a second of Verstappen, but eventually stayed ahead of Hamilton, on his way to his 18th victory. ,,What a job, guys. We did it”, he exulted after the exciting fight. There was no real fighting on the asphalt even after the exciting first meters on the hill of Circuit of The Americas, where the British seven-time champion was simply a rapper. But also the chess of the clever minds within the two formations continued to fascinate the 180,000 American fans until the checkered flag fell.

From start to finish, the suspense was over, with the two biggest stars of Formula 1 once again in the leading role. And as if he didn’t already have enough to do behind the wheel, Verstappen joined in to play chess. Switched to hard himself early on, Verstappen thought aloud, with teammate Sergio Pérez still at the front of Hamilton’s tail. ,,Maybe we shouldn’t let Checo pressurize too long”, suggested Verstappen, after which the Mexican was immediately directed into the pitlane. To which Mercedes had to respond.

It all fit the bill of a strong, thoughtful weekend on the part of Red Bull Racing. Traveled to America after Turkey and Russia with some trepidation, because yes Mercedes was scary fast there. And they were on the first day of training in Austin. But the turning point came on Saturday, suddenly they were there again. They were even for it. A development that also positively surprised Verstappen.

In the race Hamilton still had the slightly faster material, but nothing is different. With smart play, a role in which Red Bull Racing was naturally forced by the early takeover at the front, the formation kept up well. Verstappen, for example, ran out to a 12-point difference in the World Cup, where he now leads with 287.5 points ahead of Hamilton (275.5), who took another bonus point. ,,I love this strategy”, concluded Verstappen. “Sometimes it’s good to be aggressive.”

It promises a lot for the last five races that remain in this world championship. In total, a maximum of 130 points to be shared in Mexico, Brazil, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the final number in Abu Dhabi. The favorite? You name it. This World Cup goes up and down like a yo-yo, proved extremely difficult to predict in recent months. It is not without reason that they have already changed the championship lead five times. Formula 1 is a circus with twenty drivers and ten teams, but two men stand out enormously and hardly avoid each other, as proved once again in America.
