MIPP joins Perikatan Nasional

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP) has been accepted into Perikatan Nasional as its newest component.

MIPP president P Punithan has also been appointed a deputy chairman of the coalition.

The party received its membership letter from PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin before the start of the PN Supreme Council here this evening.

“I would like to express my gratitude to PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin and all the PN leaders for their unanimous recognition of MIPP, and in supporting us to be accepted as a component party,” Punithan said later in a statement.

PN also comprises Bersatu, PAS, Gerakan, and the Sabah Progressive Party.

Earlier today, FMT reported that PN was expected to unveil MIPP as its newest component party this evening.

A source told FMT that the PN Supreme Council had unanimously agreed to accept MIPP, which applied to join the opposition coalition last year.

Noting that MIC joined the Alliance Party – which was the forerunner of Barisan Nasional – in 1954, Punithan said “a new chapter” was being written in the country’s political history after seven decades.

He also said MIPP’s inclusion in PN sends a “clear message” that the coalition prioritises the Indian community, which is the third-largest ethnic group in the country.

“MIPP will champion the Indian community’s development to ensure it does not fall behind in the nation’s development.

“MIPP is also committed to bringing about a holistic economic development agenda and narrative for the Indian community.

“I urge the Indian community to support PN for a brighter future,” he said.

Last year, a study by analyst Bridget Welsh, published by Malaysiakini, revealed that Indian votes for Pakatan Harapan had dropped by 21%, 19% and 12% in Negeri Sembilan, Penang and Selangor, respectively, at the six state polls.

On the other hand, Indian votes for PN in Penang, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor increased by 29%, 19% and 14%, respectively.
