USMNT's Premier League players may miss next round of World Cup qualifiers

The US men’s national team may face Panama in the next round of 2022 World Cup qualifiers without Christian Pulisic and several other U.K. based players as their Central American rival remains on the British government’s red list.

The 10th October match at Estadio Rommel Fernández in Panama would rule out U.K players from any Premier League action in the following days, so should Pulisic travel with the USMNT, he would miss Chelsea‘s game against Brentford on 16 October and the Champions League game against Malmo FF on 20 October.

Manchester City’s Zack Steffen and Norwich City forward Josh Sargent, who played an integral role in the national team’s summer success, are those in doubt for the qualifying match, forcing Gregg Berhalter to look deeper into his roster.

Others who may be missing include Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Ethan Horvath and Fulham defenders Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson.

The USMNT cannot afford to lose points in the upcoming international window after winning only one out of their last three qualifiers, and currently sit tied with Panama for third place as the two teams boast only five points in three games.

The British government stated on Friday that it will shift on October 4th from a three-tier system of green, amber and red nations – low, medium and high risk – to a two-tier system of red and open. Eight countries are being removed from the red list as of next Wednesday but Panama is not among those being changed.
