US sportswear giant Lids is making a leap across the Atlantic with plans for more than 100 stores across Europe.
The retailer, which specialises in branded merchandise from the major American football, basketball, hockey and baseball teams, has kicked off its global expansion in London with new branches in Seven Dials and the O2’s Peninsula Square.
Tom Ripley, CEO at Lids and a partner at its parent company Ames Watson, said: “Lids has become one of the strongest retailers in North America and we’re thrilled to take this growth internationally.”
The chain has grown into a billion-dollar business since being acquired by AW in 2019 and now operates almost 2000 outlets in the US and Canada including the new National Hockey League and National Basketball Association flagships in New York.
It sells 30 million hats — mostly baseball caps — every year.
Samantha Bain-Mollison, retail director at commercial landlord Shaftesbury, Said: “Providing the globally recognised American retailer Lids with its first UK store is incredible for the Seven Dials community and reflects the global attraction and success of this unique destination in the heart of London’s West End.
“We worked closely with Lids to make this debut possible as the first part of its European expansion.”Internet Explorer Channel Network
