US protests China’s baseless territorial claims in the East Sea

The US has rejected China’s claims as inconsistent with international law, said Kelly Craft, US Ambassador to the UN in a letter sent Monday to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

She asked him to circulate the letter to all UN members as a document of the UN General Assembly and Security Council and post it on the web page of the Office of Legal Affairs, Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea.

The US rejects China’s claims as unlawful and dangerous, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Twitter on Tuesday, calling UN members to unite to uphold international law and maritime freedom.
