Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie on Wednesday said that the president of the Confederacy Jefferson Davis had more class than former President Donald Trump during a panel Wednesday.
Christie opposes the recent decisions to ban Trump from the ballot in Colorado and Maine on the grounds that Trump is an insurrectionist, and appeared on The View to discuss his stance.
Christie explained that he believes Trump should be tried and convicted of insurrection before being banned from any ballots, while host Sunny Hostin pointed out that Davis was never tried for insurrection and the 14th Amendment’s provision barring insurrectionists from holding office was passed in response to the Civil War. Christie responded by saying that Davis’ eligibility to hold office was “never tested.”

“It was never tested because Jefferson Davis, if I you imagine saying this, the president of the Confederacy had some class,” said Christie. “And decided never to run for office in the United States again.”
The Colorado Supreme Court and Maine’s secretary of state both issued rulings that Trump was not eligible to appear on the states’ respective ballots because of his attempts to overturn the 2020 election and his role in the Jan. 6, 2021 storming of the Capitol.
