Editor’s note: This post has been updated with additional reopening information including testing and vaccination requirements and testing sites.

As the travel industry reopens following COVID-19 shutdowns, TPG suggests that you talk to your doctor, follow health officials’ guidance and research local travel restrictions before booking that next trip. We will be here to help you prepare, whether it is next month or next year.

Turks and Caicos reopened over the summer, but this fall some additional guidelines and vaccine requirements were implemented. The Caribbean destination has also been given a Level 3 travel advisory designation, indicating a high level of COVID-19 and crime, according to the Bureau of Consular Affairs. With the travel landscape still evolving, here are the details you should know before you plan a trip to Turks and Caicos.

What you need to visit Turks and Caicos

The following protocols from the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas  took effect on Sept. 1, 2021:

  • All visitors, aged 16 years of age and above, must be fully vaccinated which means that the person has received two doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine and 14 days have elapsed since the second dose. A list of approved vaccines to enter Turks and Caicos can be found here.
  • Visitors who test positive during their stay are required to quarantine, at their expense, for 10 days, and receive a negative COVID-19 test prior to release.
  • All visitors, regardless of vaccination status, are required to take a negative COVID-19 test no more than three days prior to arrival in the islands.

According to the Turks and Caicos Tourism Board, travelers must also ensure that they have enough travel insurance coverage to cover medical costs and quarantine costs if they test positive.

Proof of compliance with the above requirements is part of the travel authorization process visitors must complete through the TCI Assured portal. Before you begin, check out the list of frequently-asked questions here.

What’s open in Turks and Caicos

A British Overseas Territory, the Turks and Caicos include the gateway island of Providenciales, also known as Provo. In general, hotels and restaurants began to reopen there over the summer, when flights were permitted to land at Providenciales International Airport (PLS).

Beaches, grocery stores, pharmacies and other open-air businesses are open.

Grace Bay Beach in Provo is home to luxury resorts, shops and restaurants. (You’ll find a number of approved testing sites at Provo’s hotels and resorts.) There is a 14-mile barrier reef on Provo’s north shore that’s great for scuba diving, plus another famous scuba spot on Grand Turk Island.

Getting to turks and caicos

Major airlines with service to PLS include the following:

  • American Airlines: Direct flights from Miami (MIA) and Dallas (DFW)
  • JetBlue: Nonstop flights from New York (JFK ) and Fort Lauderdale (FLL)
  • United: Direct service from Newark (EWR),  Charlotte (CLT) and Chicago (ORD)
  • Delta: Daily flights from Atlanta (ATL).
  • Southwest: Service from Denver (DEN) and Baltimore/Washington (BWI) with a change over in Fort Lauderdale (FLL)
  • WestJet: Service from Toronto’s airport (YYZ) and Montreal (YUL).

Where to Stay in turks and caicos

Resorts and hotels may impose their own additional protocols and offer varied testing availability. So, the government suggests reaching out to your property for specifics before you travel.

If you’re planning to travel this winter, Marriott’s new hotel,  The Ritz-Carlton, Turks and Caicos has availability in early 2022 , with prices ranging from U.S. $1,202-1,640 per night. As a Category 8 hotel in Marriott’s Bonvoy chart, off-peak nights will cost you 70,000 points, standard nights 85,000 and peak nights 100,000 points apiece.

The Ritz Carlton, Turks & Caicos features 155 guest rooms and 27 suites; a full-service spa; a fully equipped gym; Ritz Kids club; a casino and views of the turquoise waters of Grace Bay Beach.

Hyatt’s Sailrock Resort is another option. Rates this winter start at $780 per night or 40,000 World of Hyatt points per night. Sailrock is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World and features 36 suites and villas on over 770 acres.

Bottom Line

Traveling to Turks and Caicos may now require some extra documentation, advance planning and expense, but no more so than other destinations that have opened up post-pandemic. Once you settle in comfortably on a warm beach this winter, the precautions will all seem worthwhile.

These are the best credit cards for dining out, taking out, and ordering in to maximize every meal purchase.
