Up to Two Storms Could Enter the Philippines This May-PAGASA
(SPOT.ph) After months of searing temperatures, we might finally be getting a break.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued a weather forecast indicating that one or two typhoons may enter or develop within the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) in May.
“Ngayong buwan ng Mayo, isa o hanggang sa dalawang bagyo ang maaring pumasok ng ating PAR,” PAGASA Weather Specialist Rhea Torres said in the 4 a.m. weather forecast on May 1. However, these storms likely won’t form until later this month as the country continues to feel the impact of El Niño.
Have we come to a point where a possible storm is now good news to us?
What to expect if a storm arrives in May
If a typhoon does form, PAGASA found that it could follow one of two potential paths. The first scenario involves a storm making a near-shore landfall and then moving away from the archipelago. Alternatively, a storm might emerge or enter through eastern Mindanao, then travel towards the Cagayan Valley, Eastern Visayas, Bicol Region, MIMAROPA, and parts of CALABARZON before exiting via the West Philippine Sea.
“Sa unang scenario po ay posible po itong lumapit ng ating kapuluan bago ito mag-recurve papalayo ng ating bansa,” Torres said. “‘Yung second scenario naman kung mas mababa po yung entry point ng bagyo or mabuo po ito sa may eastern section ng Mindanao.”
This PAGASA forecast comes as the Philippines endures exceptionally high temperatures that are expected to persist until mid-May when the transition from the dry season to the rainy season begins. The country faces an average of 20 storms each year.
Despite the predicted storms, Torres emphasized the importance of staying updated with weather forecasts as typhoon tracks can change based on current atmospheric conditions.
