AGRA: Finally cleared of a rape charge that was slapped on him in year 2000, when he was 16, a man from UP’s Aligarh district said he had suffered the stigma of being called a rapist for 22 years, reports Anuja Jaiswal.
After the Juvenile Justice Board’s order on Thursday, the man said, “Finally, I am free from the tag of being called a ‘rapist’. I was accused of a crime I never committed. Facing the stigma all these years has been difficult, painful and humiliating, both for me and my family. I was dragged into this case because of a land dispute between two parties. But I suffered nonetheless.”
In their order, principal magistrate at JJB, Naresh Kumar Diwakar, and members Sadhna Gupta and Prashant Singh Raghav said the “prosecution had failed to prove that the accused had committed the rape and, therefore, the court acquits him”. The man’s lawyers, G C Sinha and K K Gautam, said an FIR was registered against their client and his friend at Atrauli police station on August 26, 2000 for allegedly raping a minor girl from neighbourhood.
