Up Late with Ben Harvey: What I know about the bikie code of silence as Joe Versace murder probe continues

News, WA News, Crime

Ben Harvey has lifted the lid on the so-called bikie “code of silence”, revealing it may not be as silent as many people might think.

In Monday’s episode of Up Late, Harvey opens up on the arrest of Rebels bikie associate Joshua Colin Duperouzel, who was taken into custody following the shooting death of bikie associate Joe Versace on Thursday.

Harvey explains that the investigation into Nick Martin’s death in 2020 confirmed to police that the swifter the response, the higher the chance of getting an early arrest.

That’s why we “very quickly” started seeing videos and images of police raiding houses all over Perth.

“Nothing gets bikies talking on their phones like a TRG raid,” he said.

“Mobile phones are playing an increasingly important role in police investigations like this one, not only because people are caught on phone intercepts giving helpful clues — but also because phone tower triangulation means they can put a person near the scene of a crime.”

But, Harvey quips, you can’t beat good old-fashioned face-to-face intel — which explains why they were keen to circulate images of Rebels boss Karl Labrook “helping” the police with their enquiries.

“(The bikie code of silence) is not exactly what everyone thinks it is,” he said.

“Bikies don’t line up to have selfies with Constable Care, but they do talk to cops.

“Even the old-school gangs talk to detectives occasionally, they just don’t like people knowing when they do.”
