New England Patriots
When new New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo took over the team, he immediately suggested that the team would be very active in trying to improve the team in free agency as he said that the team was ready to “burn some cash.” But it doesn’t sound like that’s actually going to happen, after all.
During a press conference at the NFL Combine this week, Jerod Mayo admitted that he ‘kind of misspoke’ regarding his comments earlier and pushed back on the idea that the Patriots were going to be big spenders this offseason.
“You know, I kind of misspoke when I said ‘burn some cash’ but I was excited when you see those numbers,” Mayo said according to Pro Football Talk. “But when you reflect on those numbers . . . you don’t have to spend all of it in one year. This is going to be a process. So I don’t want people to think, ‘you got 60 million dollars, 70 million, whatever, so let’s get this guy, that guy, that guy’ . . . it may work for a couple games, or maybe a season, but it won’t work long term.”
The Patriots will undeniably pursue some players that they think will help their team this offseason, but it sounds like they won’t go quite as crazy as Mayo originally suggested.
