Trump holds comfortable lead over Biden despite legal woes — as most find president’s term a failure, new poll shows

Nearly two-thirds of registered voters consider Joe Biden’s presidency to be a failure so far, with Donald Trump continuing to hold a comfortable lead in the race for the White House, a CNN poll said.

The poll conducted by SSRS and released Sunday found that 49% of registered voters backed Trump over Biden’s 43% in a head-to-head matchup, the network reported.

Biden’s number was at 45% as recently as January.

The poll also found that 61% of registered voters who were questioned considered Biden’s presidency so far a failure, compared with 57% in January, while only 39% said it had been successful, a dip over the 41% approval from voters at the start of the year, the outlet said.

Nonetheless, 17% of those polled said they don’t like Biden or Trump.

“Republicans now are more unified around the idea that Trump’s presidency was a success than Democrats are that Biden’s has been one,” the news network said.

“Overall, 92% of Republicans call Trump’s time in office a success while just 73% of Democrats say Biden’s has been a success so far. Among independents, 51% say Trump’s presidency was successful while only 37% see Biden’s as a success,” the report said.

Voters gave Biden particularly low scores on the economy and inflation, with 34% and 29% ratings, respectively — with 62% of those who say the economy is “deeply important” leaning for Trump.

Among other issues, 48% of voters polled said they considered immigration, crime and gun policy as “extremely important” issues, with health care, abortion and Supreme Court nominations lagging.

But beyond the issues registered voters aren’t too fond of either candidate — 58% had an unfavorable view of Biden while 55% said they weren’t keen on Trump.

Adding insult to injury, more than half — or 53% — were dissatisfied with the choice.

The overall favorable numbers for Trump come as the former president is on trial in Manhattan on criminal fraud charges that he illegally ordered payments to former porn star Stormy Daniels to keep mum about an alleged tryst in 2016, before Trump won the election.

A Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll released last week determined that Trump was nonetheless leading Biden by 7% in four key battleground states — Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina.
