Masters 2024 live updates: Scheffler takes solo lead, Tiger's tough day continues

It’s officially the weekend at Augusta National, and Moving Day is bound to be a great one. We have three tremendous co-leaders to start Day 3—Scottie Scheffler, Max Homa and Bryson DeChambeau all share the lead heading into Saturday.

(Scroll down for the latest updates from our crew at Augusta National.)

Though the conditions on Friday were extremely difficult with gusts up to 30-35 miles per hour, the wind will be a little more calm—with a sustained wind around 10 miles per hour with gusts up to 20 mph. Some more accessible pin positions on Day 3 should allow players to put some scores as we typically see on Saturday at the Masters. Those right behind the leaders—Nicolai Hojgaard, Cameron Davis, Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Aberg, Tommy Fleetwood—will have the chance to join the conversation.

Plus, there are rumors that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce might fly into town. Oh, and we haven’t even mentioned Tiger Woods, who was extremely impressive on a marathon Friday to secure a weekend tee time at Augusta National for a record 24th time. Buckle up, folks … this could be an all-time content day.

Masters 2024: Live updates from Day 3 at Augusta National:

4:34 p.m.: A big risk from Tyrrell Hatton will really cost him at No. 15. His ball will find the water. Moments later, Tiger pulls a similar mistake popping it right over the green. Hatton will take a penalty drop and likely drop from his current T-14 placement. Harsh course at the moment, especially with the wind powering on.

4:15 p.m.: Within moments of each other, Åberg and Hatton both get very lucky rolls on their respective holes. Two under for the day, Hatton has been eclipsed by Woods but has been playing much better golf today. His last two bogeys, on No. 7 and No. 12, were both immediately followed up by birdies. Pretty strong showing considering his up-and-down takes on Augusta.

3:53 p.m.: We’re at a bit of a standstill here with Scheffler in pole position and Homa just one shot behind him. Morikawa and DeChambeau round out the top four. Done with his Saturday, Chris Kirk has had the best round of the day at four under. Five birdies and just one bogey will do that for you. A 68 after opening rounds of 74 and 75 isn’t a bad start to the weekend.

3:36 p.m.: Ludvig Åberg and Matthieu Pavon have been playing some dang quick golf. The Swede and Frenchman, respectively, are both within the top 11 with Åberg two under for the day. The first-time Masters competitor is now four over in his first competitive event at Augusta National and just three strokes back of Scheffler at the moment. Speaking of … Scheffler dropped a stroke after a bogey on No. 4 after leaving a 12-foot putt just shy for par. He’s powering through the subsequent par five, however, so he might be at eight under yet again in a jiffy.

3:23 p.m.: Back at No. 10, Tiger Woods misses out on a much-needed birdie attempt. It gets between three to four feet away from the hole, and Tiger will at least sink that one. It’s his first par in quite some time. A par will stop the bleeding a bit, but his first nine holes today ended up being the worst front nine in Woods’ Masters history.

On the other side of things, Scottie Scheffler still leads at Augusta National. The on-fire golfer is two strokes better than the trio behind him and already two under for the day through three holes. It was a ridiculously long putt on No. 3 that gave him just a little bit of a cushion. This event may really just come down to Meredith Scheffler and when she goes into labor.

3:15 p.m.: We mentioned that Collin Morikawa was lurking before. Now he’s right back in it. Three birdies over his first three holes of the day has Morikawa just one stroke back of leader Scottie Scheffler and knotted up with Bryson and Homa. According to Justin Ray, Morikawa is currently ranked fifth in the field when it comes to short-game approach. He was 79th entering the Masters.

3 p.m.: Tiger misses his drive way left on nine, which left him with a difficult shot out of the pinestraw. He appeared to be stretching his back out right before the shot and then after hitting it, he hunched over in pain. Hopefully this isn’t another early WD situation, but if he can’t get anything going soon, it’s a definite possibility.

Meanwhile, everybody is out on the course, including the final twosome – Bryson DeChambeau and Max Homa. They both made par at No. 1 to remain at six under, one off Scheffler’s lead.

2:44 p.m.: Tiger Woods has made history, folks. Just not that good kind. The 15-time major champion made an absolute mess of the par-5 eighth hole, double-bogeying it for the first time in his Masters career (he did triple it in 1999). Bruuuutal. That’s a double-double stretch, the type you only see at your local muni. He’s now six over for the week.

Way back at the first hole, Scottie Scheffler begins his third round with a birdie to get to seven under. Curtains (kidding … maybe). Collin Morikawa also birdied No. 1 to reach four under. Lurking.

2:24 p.m.: Look, Tiger was never winning this week, but maybe if he was able to make a few birdies on Saturday and post a decently low number … I don’t know, we can dream. Unfortunately, that dream is dead. Woods just barely missed the fairway on No. 7 but was blocked out by an overhanging tree branch, then he attempted to play a big cut that didn’t quite cut. On his long pitch shot, he put it in the front bunker, then failed to get up and down. His first double bogey of the week is an absolute killer, dropping him all the way down to four over, T-33.

Elsewhere on the course, we’ve got some action. Ryan Fox has birdied his first two holes to climb to three under, while Cameron Smith just jumped to two under with a birdie at No. 3. Cameron Young birdied the first and is also at two under.

2:10 p.m.: Aaaaaaand he gave it right back at the sixth. His tee shot just trickled off the back of the green and he went with putter and left it short, then missed an eight footer. Back to plus two.

1:57 p.m.: Bang, BANG! Tiger Woods birdies the par-4 fifth, historically one of the hardest holes on the entire course. No big deal. Back to +1. CAT!

1:42 p.m.: Tiger nuked one at the third but just missed the fairway left, leaving a tough uphill wedge shot to the back right pin. He hit it about 16 feet past and two-putted for par. Unfortunately, he promptly dropped a shot at No. 4, missing a shorty for par. Woods is now two over for the tournament, eight back.

The man on the course closest to the leaders? Xander Schauffele, who started par-par but then made birdie at No. 3. He’s one under, five back.

1:18 p.m.: Tiger hit a great birdie putt at No. 2 but it just misses on the high side. That would’ve been a heckuva up-and-down for birdie. He’ll remain at 1-over and even par for the day. Hatton also parred to remain at 1-over.

1:09 p.m.: Tiger fanned his tee shot a little right, about 20 yards shy of the right fairway bunker, and has gone right with his fairway-wood approach. He has a tonnnnn of green to work with with a very left-hand pin at No. 2. We might see some magician type stuff from Tiger here.

Ah, man. Tiger played a sporty chip across the green but it checks up about 15 feet short of the pin. He’ll have to make a decently long one for birdie to get under par.

12:56 p.m.: Tiger navigated the treacherous approach putt with ease and holes a two-footer for his par. He’ll remain 1-over par. Meanwhile Hatton stuck an absolute dime of an approach shot to two feet. He’ll take the honors off the second tee, knocking in a three-footer for his birdie to get to 1-over.

12:45 p.m.: Tiger is off in his third round! The 15-time major champ striped a cut down the middle of the fairway—305 yards uphill—at the first hole. That was nearly 20 yards past his playing partner Tyrrell Hatton. Tiger has been sneaky long all week … even on Friday when physically he must have been struggling after such a long day. We’ll be here to update you on the biggest happenings of his Day 3.

Here are a few shots of him from the practice range:

12:21 p.m.: A remarkable even-par 72 from Tiger Woods on Friday—after playing 23 holes with the resumption of play from the first round—was such an impressive performance, and evident of the absolute grit that the 15-time major champion has shown throughout his career.

He earned his record-breaking 24th consecutive made cut and is almost ready for his third round to get underway at 12:45 p.m., alongside Tyrrell Hatton.

People are excited at Augusta National at the possibility of Taylor Swift coming to the Masters on Saturday with Travis Kelce, who has appeared in the past. Tiger Woods arriving at Augusta might be taking second fiddle to another global star who might be in the same zip code. (If the rumors are true … we’ll see.)

12:02 p.m.: Rickie Fowler, off in the first group of the day alongside Hideki Matsuyama, just holed a tasty chip at the 12th hole. That’s a nice highlight for Fowler on what has otherwise been a disappointing return to Augusta National (it’s his first time back since 2020). Hideki and Rickie are both 1-under on their days and 5-over overall.

11:27 a.m.: Hideki is off to a hot start in his second round—he just holed his third birdie of the day, adding one at the ninth hole to turn in 33. (He also birdied the second and third holes.) That gets the 2021 Masters champion to 3-over.

Rather insanely, Rory just made his first birdie in 23 holes (he hadn’t had one since the 14th hole on Thursday). After an absolute missile off the second tee—which cleared the right fairway bunker and tumbled another 50 yards or so—Rory got up and down from the left greenside bunker to make up for the bogey on the first hole. Rory’s now back to 4-over for the tourney.

Check out this absolute heat-seeking missle that the Northern Irishman fired on No. 2. That added yardage in the new teeing location couldn’t stop Rory from hitting—what Shane Bacon called on the broadcast—an absolutely obliterated shot off the tee:

We’re hopeful there will be video of the tee shot. At 380 yards, that has to be one of the longest tee shots we can recall seeing. Obviously it tumbled a ton down the turning, sloped fairway of the second hole. But sheeeeshaloo, that was taken to pound town.

11:07 a.m.: There are some early red numbers out there in this third round. Augusta resident Luke List, making his first appearance at the Masters since 2005 when he was the runner-up at the ’04 U.S. Amateur, is 3-under through his first 5 holes. Hideki Matsuyama, a pre-tournament favorite, is 2-under through 7.

Rory McIlroy’s start isn’t amongst those hot ones. After finding the fairway bunker off the tee, Rory came up short with his approach and then missed a four-footer for his par. Woof … the Northern Irishman didn’t even hit the hole. That’s a disappointing start, but he’ll have a good chance to make up for it at No. 2.

Here are all the pin positions for the third round at the Masters:
