Larry David, en ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’.

Cuenta una leyenda tal vez cierta que Sinatra tuvo un infarto la noche en que se emitía el final de Seinfeld. La ambulancia llegó presta, en muy pocos minutos, y le trasladó al hospital en un santiamén: no había tráfico porque todo el mundo estaba en casa viendo Seinfeld. La audiencia de aquel episodio fue de 76 millones de espectadores. No hay una serie actual que llegue ni de lejos a esas cifras. Sinatra murió, como murió Seinfeld, el 14 de mayo de 1998. Al siglo XX le quedaban unos redobles, pero esa noche podían darlo ya por amortizado. Al menos, para la cultura popular norteamericana.

El siglo XX, tan genocida él, se ha resistido a morir y ha habido que rematarlo varias veces. Casi cada semana vuelve a boquear y le damos otra puntilla. Uno de sus últimos estertores televisivos sucedió hace unas semanas en HBO Max, cuando Curb Your Enthusiasm, conocida en España como Larry David, echó el telón. No hay constancia de que ningún cantante melódico sufriera un infarto durante su último episodio, que tampoco fue visto por 76 millones de personas.

A diferencia de su obra más popular, la ficción autobiográfica del creador de Seinfeld se despidió con los aplausos melancólicos y suspirantes de un puñado de nostálgicos del siglo XX, íntimamente agradecidos por tantas horas de risas y resignados a seguir viviendo en un mundo donde los gamberros nihilistas y bocazas ya no le hacen gracia a casi nadie. Por eso David Remnick tituló su reseña-obituario en The New Yorker: No Kaddish for Curb. Es decir: sin oración fúnebre para Curb.

Cuando murió Schönberg, de quien se celebra el 150 aniversario, The New York Times le dedicó una necrológica en primera plana. La muerte del personaje de Larry David (la persona vivirá muchos años más, esperamos) ha propiciado un homenaje en The New Yorker, la biblia de la intelectualidad liberal (progre, diríamos en España). Dice Remnick que Curb Your Enthusiasm merece un sitio de honor en el canon de esa categoría cultural difusa que se conoce como humor judío, y yo creo que lo merece en el canon cultural, sin apellidos. Con la jubilación de David no perdemos solo un puñado de risotadas provocadas por chistes soeces, situaciones de vergüenza ajena y quebrantamientos del decoro más finolis e hipócrita, sino un estilo, una actitud, una manera de ser. Cosas tal vez banales, pero importantísimas para quienes vinimos al mundo a reír.
