Una marcha por la universidad y por el legado de Bernie Houssay

Nos juntamos para marchar a las 14 en Plaza Houssay. Plaza, justamente llamada así, por Bernardo Alberto Houssay, médico, farmacéutico, docente e investigador de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, galardonado con el Premio Nobel de Medicina en 1947 por sus investigaciones sobre la diabetes: fue uno de los tres ganadores en ciencia de la historia argentina.

A Houssay lo apodaban “Bernie” en el “fulbito”, pero no era bueno solo jugando a la pelota, también se destacó en el atletismo, en el tenis y en el remo. Eran otros tiempos y su pasión por el deporte se despertó en el Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires, que presentaba entre sus postulados educativos la formación integral de los estudiantes, dándole relevancia no solo al estudio sino también a las actividades físicas y deportivas.

Lo curioso de Houssay, que cruza el deporte con la Universidad, es que mientras estudiaba formó parte del equipo de la Asociación Atlética de la Facultad de Medicina, que fue un club pionero en el fútbol criollo. Hoy no existe, pero quedó en los libros de historia futbolera con un hecho memorable: cuando en 1905, por el torneo oficial de la tercera categoría de la Argentina Football Association (antecesora de la AFA), el equipo universitario venció 3 a 2 a un novel River Plate, con dos goles de “Bernie”.

Desde la plaza de las facultades, salimos marchando en caravana junto con los colegas de Ciencias Económicas. Situada enfrente, sobre Avenida Córdoba, en esa facultad estudió Daniel Vega, otro que mixtura universidad y fútbol, quien jugó en varios clubes, se destacó en Platense y transitó los pasillos de la Universidad de Buenos Aires para ser hoy el mánager/secretario técnico del Club Atlético Huracán. Vega no fue el único, lo antecedieron, entre otros, Carlos Salvador Bilardo y Raúl Madero. También en otros deportes, como la judoca campeona olímpica: Paula Pareto Juntos, hermanados en la caminata, recorrimos las cuatro cuadras que conducen hasta Callao. Éramos miles los que doblamos a la derecha para continuar hasta el Congreso, el paso previo a llegar a la Plaza de Mayo. A medida que avanzábamos nos topábamos con más gente, con columnas que venían de otros orígenes. Escuelas secundarias, terciarios y otras universidades. Nuestros pasos cada vez eran más lentos.

Justo delante nuestro marchaba un grupo nutrido de hinchas (aparentemente de Boca) con bombos y platillos. Llegamos atrás de ellos hasta la esquina de avenida Callao y Bartolomé Mitre. Eran las 15.30 y todavía pensábamos que podíamos llegar a destino en horario; pero de ahí en más, pasaron las horas y no pudimos movernos. La cantidad de gente era tal que la caravana quedó bloqueada y el cruce de Callao con Rivadavia ya estaba colapsado. Por eso, cuando te dicen que eran solo ciento cincuenta mil personas, no se lo cree nadie.

Se hicieron las 17.30 y la caravana de la Facultad de Medicina, donde estábamos las personas de salud pública y ciencias del deporte, además del centro de estudiantes y el resto de las cátedras, seguía clavada en el mismo lugar. Afortunadamente, delante nuestro estaban los muchachos de la banda futbolera que tocaban y tocaban como la orquesta del Titanic sabiendo que el sonido reconforta más allá de no lograr el objetivo de llegar a Plaza de Mayo. Nuestra suerte estaba echada. Nos conformábamos con cantar las canciones de cancha y finalizamos entonando las estrofas del Himno Nacional Argentino, a unos pocos pasos del Congreso Nacional.

Cientos de miles fuimos el 23 de abril, los que caminamos para demostrar que la educación gratuita y de calidad es un derecho innegociable para el pueblo argentino. Que hay que cuidar. Que hay que auditar, pero que nunca hay que desfinanciar.

Algo que también hubiese pensado “Bernie”, que marchaba con nosotros… en las pancartas.
