Marcos eyes internet access for all via National Fiber Backbone project

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday said he envisions an internet landscape where even sari-sari stores could go online.

During the launch of Phase 1 of the National Fiber Backbone project, Marcos said that micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) could be digitized.

“It is a very big push to bring MSMEs into the digital space so that we get to the point where the sari-sari store, doesn’t sell only to the village. The sari-sari store could go anywhere, and that brings us into the digital space,” said Marcos in his speech.

The President said that even nano-enterprises, such as shoe-shine boys, can have access to the internet.

“Nationally, this is the infrastructure that will open employment opportunities, improve market efficiency, attract foreign investment, and stimulate livelihood across the different sectors of our economy and our society,” said Marcos.

According to the Department of Information and Communications (DICT), the project is meant to bolster internet access.

The first phase of the project will expand the internet capacity of 14 provinces across Northern and Central Luzon, including Metro Manila.

Marcos said there are five more phases in the project until the end of his term in 2028.

“I call upon everyone involved in this mega project to remain committed to our original vision, to bring our businesses closer to consumers, our nation closer to the rest of the world, and our people closer to our loved ones,” said Marcos.
