U.S. Postal Service asks for these changes to your mailbox starting May 19
May 9—STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — It’s time to show your mailbox some tender loving care.
Every year, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) sets aside the third week of May for its Mailbox Improvement Week, urging customers to assess and, if needed, enhance the appearance of their mailboxes.
Plus, it can add a nice touch to the neighborhood.
“Neat, attractive mailboxes make a significant contribution to the appearance of the countryside and streets in suburban areas,” the U.S. Postal Service said in recently issued postal bulletin.
Mailbox Improvement Week, which runs from May 19-25, emphasizes the importance of mailboxes that are Postmaster General approved, fully functional, weatherproof, safe, conveniently located, tidy, and large enough to support mail and package volumes.
These factors make delivering and collecting mail smoother and improve service along the entire route, according to the USPS.
Typical tasks homeowners might need to do include:
—Fixing loose hinges on mailbox doors
—Repainting rusted or peeling mailboxes
—Securing loose mailbox posts
—Adding or changing house numbers
You also may want to think about switching to a modern mailbox. Newer designs are package-friendly, capable of holding several boxes along with letters, cards and magazines.
