Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk 'is OFF' as Ukrainian quits training camp

The long awaited heavyweight unification bout between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk is off, according to reports. After months of negotiations, provisions for an April 29 bout at London’s Wembley Stadium have collapsed, with the Ukrainian’s team confirming he has left his training camp.

Egis Klimas, the manager of the WBA, IBF, and WBO heavyweight champion told ESPN that despite his client publicly agreeing to a 70-30 split, Fury continued making demands: “No matter how much Usyk compromised, he was pushed for more,” he said.

Klimas also stated that the 36-year-old planned to return in June or July to make a mandatory defence, with Daniel Dubois the leading contender. Fury, or his representatives, are yet to comment on the development.

Earlier this month, the blockbuster clash appeared to have been salvaged when Usyk appeared to call the bluff of ‘The Gypsy King’, agreeing to Fury’s new financial proposal. But the WBC champion then tried to further alter negotiations by proposing the rematch clause was scrapped.

But on March 14, it seemed that a compromise had finally been reached. Fury, 34, tweeted a video claiming the fight would indeed go ahead on April 29, and announced he would be undertaking a ‘social media blackout’ while he entered his training camp.

And on Sunday, Fury’s promoter Frank Warren teased fans by suggesting a deal was soon to be announced. Following Arsenal’s win over Crystal Palace, he tweeted: “Arsenal 8 points clear! Even bigger news to come!”

Anthony Joshua v Oleksandr Usyk Press Conference

But the latest development signifies more bitter disappointment for British boxing fans. Last year, negotiations for a Fury v Anthony Joshua bout were also scuppered, with both teams left blaming the other.

Instead, Fury fought Derek Chisora in an underwhelming trilogy bout on December 3. In the aftermath, Usyk, who was ringside, joined his rival in the ring for an intense stare-down, seemingly kicking off the build-up to a fight in the UK or Saudi Arabia.
