Tyson Fury exposed as trainer speaks out after Oleksandr Usyk fight officially collapses

Tyson Fury’s trainer SugarHill Steward has exposed the WBC champion by declaring that he didn’t do any training with his boxer for the Oleksandr Usyk fight. Steward touched down in the UK earlier this month as Fury affirmed that he had started his camp for Usyk.

However, Steward says he was only in the UK to work with WBO cruiserweight champion Lawrence Okolie, who boxes David Light this weekend and hadn’t been informed that his services were required by Fury. Many fans and experts have speculated that Fury was calling Usyk’s bluff in negotiations and Steward’s recent comments certainly don’t do much for the Mancunian’s case.

“Everybody forgot that I’m training Lawrence Okolie and his fight is in Manchester,” Steward told IFL TV. “My flight ticket leaves March 28th.

“I want [Fury] to fight the best and he wants to fight the best. Hey, it happens when it happens. We have no control over it. All we can do is sit and control things we have control over and wait and see what happens.

Steward claims he didn’t train Fury

“I don’t really care because I’m here, focused on Lawrence Okolie. I’m here for Lawrence. Tyson was in the gym with us, but I didn’t train Tyson. We didn’t do pads. We didn’t do anything like with Usyk. I’m training Lawrence.”

Usyk vs Fury officially broke down on Wednesday after months of drawn-out negotiations. It is understood that a disagreement over the purse splits for the rematch was the final nail in the coffin.

Usyk vs Fury is off

After reluctantly accepting Fury’s demands for a 70 per cent lion’s share of the prize pot on April 29, Usyk requested that the split be reversed for the rematch providing he won. However, according to boxing insider Mike Coppinger, The Gypsy King refused to accept anything less than 50-50, leading to the four-belt shoot-out’s eventual collapse.

Speaking to IFL TV, Usyk’s promoter Alexander Krassyuk explained why the fight had fallen through from their perspective: “We were desperate to find a compromise. Tyson didn’t want to compromise. Usyk stayed in training camp for three months because the original date was in February. Fury didn’t even train.

“He [Usyk] accepted 70-30, but how much would he have to accept more? He [Usyk] agreed to 70-30 [for April 29th], having in mind that the winner would have 70-30 for the rematch. If you’re fighting in England, you can be robbed by the judges. We’ve had this in the past. Usyk, when he accepted 70-30, his understanding was 70-30 would be the split for the winner for the rematch.”

Meanwhile, Frank Warren accused Usyk of ‘looking for a way out’. He said: “They didn’t think Tyson would be ready for the 29th and suddenly Tyson was ready for it. He has been in training camp for two and a half weeks, got trainers in from America and they looked for a way to get out.”
