Dune: Part Two movie review — The sci-fi epic is a monumental visual spectacle

After the humongous success of Dune: Part 1, the expectations from its second instalment are sky-high. One can easily say that matching the standards of the first part itself would be a great achievement for the film. So, does Dune 2 manage to do that? Let’s find out…

In the first part, we saw the Atreides, who were given control of Arrakis (one planet of the universe producing the most expensive commodity called spice), getting betrayed by the previous controlling family, the Harkonnens. They seize the planet and wipe out the entire bloodline of Atreides. However, young scion Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and his mother Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) survive as they escape to the deserts of Arrakis.

Without wasting time by showing the recap of the first part, Dune 2 picks from Paul and Jessica easing their lives with Fremen, who have made deserts their home. While Jessica follows the established by the mysterious order of space witches, the Bene Gesserit, and continues to spread that Paul is the Fremen’s prophesied messiah, her son is becoming everyone’s favourite as Fremen’s warrior and his techniques to stop the Harkonnens from restarting their spice-harvesting operations on Arrakis. But will he defeat the Harkonnens and get back his planet? For that, you need to watch Dune 2 on the silver screen.

Well, director Denis Villeneuve has once again delivered a staggering visual masterpiece, which comprises complexities of love, betrayal, politics and others. Right from several things on the massive set-pieces to intimate hand-to-hand combat sequences, the director weaves a gripping, complex and spectacular narrative, which keeps you at the edge of your seats. Right from sound, camera work, and VFX to sharp and crisp editing, Dune 2 aces in every technical department.

Talking about star performances, Timothée Chalamet continues to charm us with his complex character Paul. His camaraderie with Javier Bardem and sparkling chemistry with Zendaya (especially emotional scenes) are major highlights of Dune 2.

Another exceptional performance is given by Austin Butler as creepy and menacing Na-Baron Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, a born psychopath, who is more bloodthirsty even than his uncle Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård).

On the whole, Dune: Part Two is undoubtedly one of the best films of the year or maybe the decade. Immerse yourself in this cinematic experience as it is a visual masterpiece in every sense.
