Tuesday Southwell racing top tip: Trapista looking to add to O'Neill's success

Jonjo O'Neill's yard has been in top form recently, and Tipstrr's racing expert Steve Jones believes that Trapista is in good shape to add to his stable's recent successes at Southwell this afternoon.

The early market is headed by Ile De Jersey and Herewegohoney, who was the only one to finish in a weaker three-runner mares’ handicap at Catterick on Monday. Whether she runs again less than 24 hours later remains to be seen but she will have a 7lbs penalty in stronger company if she does.

Meanwhile, close favourite Ile De Jersey will need to have fully recovered from a last-fence fall at Taunton earlier this month, where she was leading at the time, plus she has never been tested over this distance before.

Under the circumstances, Trapista looks primed for a big run on her second run back from a 202-day break, and appears to offer good value based on her recent chasing (and seasonal) debut.

Jonjo O’Neill has his runners in good shape, with three of his last eight finishers winning, including two of the last three, both of which were ridden by Jonjo O’Neill Jnr, who is also on board today.

O’Neill’s other four mounts all came home either second, third or fourth, while two of the seven chasers that O’Neill has sent to today’s venue so far this year have won, with another three finishing in the first four.

Trapista’s return to action and chasing debut at Chepstow early this month was highly encouraging because she finished a never-nearer third of six in what was a much stronger mixed handicap over a two-mile trip that was too short for her.

Preferring a longer trip, she did well to finish within two lengths of two geldings with previous chasing experience, both of whom were race-fit and are now rated well above today’s standard.

Having been held up at the back of the field, Trapista did by far the best of those who tried to come from off the pace and it was noticeable that Jonjo Jr did not give her a hard time on the run-in, the benefit of which might be seen today, as she faces her own gender in a lower-graded handicap over her optimum distance.
