Meg Haugh tragically lost her life after falling ill while canyoneering in the Philippines

Tributes have poured in for a young Irish woman who tragically lost her life after falling ill while canyoneering in the Philippines last week.

Meg Haugh, 26, from Ballintemple in Cork had been with her friend and a group taking part in an adventure activity when she fell ill on Thursday, May 2, The Sun Star newspaper in the Philippines reports.

It is understood that while the group were canyoneering in the municipality of Badian, travelling through canyons, waterfalls and streams by jumping and swimming, Meg fell sick – with the group facing difficulty in contacting emergency services due to their location.

A number of people in the group, including a doctor, sprung into action to help provide the young woman with medical assistance, with emergency services responding to the call around an hour after she fell sick due to reception in the area.

Meg Haugh was then brought to Badian District Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Clydiejun Baratbate, an officer of the Badian Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO), told the Sun Star newspaper: “The reception of the signal is not good here because you still have to go up a bit (to get a signal)…”

“We have also requested an antenna because we’ve observed that in canyoneering, especially level two, is very low already, so we can’t get through to our repeater. So there must be a base radio at the entrance.”

Avondale United, a soccer club based in Ballintemple, paid tribute to the young Irish woman in a heartfelt statement, extending the club’s sympathies to her family.

“It is with heavy hearts that we learn of the untimely passing of young Meg Haugh, daughter of Richard Haugh,” a spokesperson for the club wrote.

“As a mark of respect to Richard, our friend, child safety officer and committee member, with a long service to the club, the club academies will not run today Friday, May 3 and our weekend home matches are cancelled.

“Our thoughts are with Richard and family including uncle John Haugh, an underage coach, extended family and friends. May Meg rest in peace.”
