Tres personas murieron y al menos otras 50 resultaron heridas cuando un tren de Amtrak que se dirigía de Los Ángeles a Chicago se estrelló contra un camión de carga el lunes por la tarde en Missouri, dijeron las autoridades.
Dos de los muertos estaban en el tren Southwest Chief y el otro estaba en el camión, dijo el cabo Justin Dunn de la Patrulla de Carreteras del Estado de Missouri.
Alrededor de las 12:42 p.m., el tren, que transportaba al menos 243 pasajeros y 12 miembros de la tripulación, chocó con un camión de volteo que estaba obstruyendo un cruce público al suroeste de Mendon, Mo. La colisión hizo descarrilar ocho vagones y dos locomotoras.
El choque tuvo lugar en un cruce no controlado donde las vías del ferrocarril BNSF se encuentran con una carretera de grava. El cruce no tenía señales electrónicas para advertir al tráfico, lo que es habitual en la zona, dijo Dunn.
Al menos 50 personas resultaron heridas y hubo “múltiples víctimas mortales” tras el accidente, según Eric McKenzie, director del Distrito de Ambulancias del Condado de Chariton, que opera cerca de Mendon. Dijo que no podía confirmar el número de personas fallecidas.
Decenas de pacientes del lugar del accidente comenzaron a llegar a los hospitales locales, y algunos fueron trasladados por aire en estado crítico, dijeron las autoridades.
Al menos tres personas fueron trasladadas al Hospital Universitario de Columbia, dijo Eric Maze, un portavoz del sistema de atención médica de la Universidad de Missouri. Mendon está a unas 84 millas al noreste de Kansas City.

El vídeo que publicó en Twitter mostraba el interior del tren de lado con pasajeros heridos rebuscando entre su equipaje.
Un pasajero publicó un vídeo en Facebook Live momentos después de salir del vagón de pasajeros descarrilado.
El gobernador de Missouri, Mike Parson, dijo en un tweet que estaba “triste” al enterarse del descarrilamiento. Dijo que la Patrulla de Carreteras del Estado de Missouri y otro personal de emergencia estaban respondiendo.
“Pedimos a los habitantes de Missouri que se unan a nosotros para rezar por todos los afectados”, dijo Parson.
El senador Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) calificó de “terrible la noticia” y dijo que las autoridades estaban “listas para ayudar con cualquier recurso federal que pudiera ser necesario.”

El Southwest Chief viaja entre Chicago y Los Ángeles con paradas en Kansas City, Albuquerque y Flagstaff, según Amtrak.
El accidente se produjo un día después de que otro tren de Amtrak chocara con un coche en el este de la bahía de California, matando al menos a tres personas. En ese caso, había 85 personas a bordo; el tren viajaba de Stockton a Martínez cuando se produjo la colisión. Según las autoridades, no hubo heridos entre los pasajeros y la tripulación del tren.
