ST. PAUL – With the injury to Zach Bogosian, Declan Chisholm is set to take on an elevated role for the Wild.
Chisholm, 24, was claimed off waivers in late January and has played in three games for the Wild this season. He has one goal and one assist in those three games.
In his first game with the Wild, the young offensive defenseman scored. It was his first NHL goal in his career.
“Yeah, that was just the happiest moment I’ve ever had in hockey I feel like,” Chisholm said. “A lot of emotions and it sucks we didn’t get the win and all that but yeah, just such a cool moment and something you’ll remember for the rest of your life.”
Now with Bogosian out for at least the next two games, Chisholm will get a chance to play in an elevated role. He practiced with Jonas Brodin today and will play on the second defense pair tomorrow.
“I liked the way that he responded, that’s a good sign,” Wild head coach John Hynes said on the former Jets defender playing in Winnipeg last game. “I think as the game went on, he got better and looked like he did the day before. We’ll see how he does and how some of the other D do. Every time we get injuries, you’re asking guys to play. Not take someone’s role over, but take certain situations and minutes, so we’ll see how it goes.”
Chisholm already runs the Wild’s second power-play unit but will now take an even bigger role of top-four minutes and likely some big matchups against the opposition’s top players.
