People who sit at work are at greater risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by more than a third compared to workers who stand during their jobs, scientists warn

Moving for just 15 minutes a day can offset the dangerous effects of sitting down.

People who mainly sit at work can increase their risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by more than a third, scientists have warned.

But a Taiwanese study found 15 to 30 minutes of exercise a day can offset this.

Researchers from Taipei Medical University examined 481,688 people over a 20-year period and found those who spent most of their time seated had a 16 per cent higher risk of death than those who mostly stood.

Workers who mostly sat down in the office also had a 34 per cent higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

The study suggested that standing desks and employers offering gym memberships could help mitigate the dangers of sedentary work lives.
