Large retail chains should be more sensible with their advertising policies. Due to the many sale advertisements, it has been “irresponsibly busy” in the stores and distribution lately. The trade union FNV complains about this in the weekend between the well-known shopping days Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

“Supermarkets and large retail chains are constantly attracting customers with bargains on social media, TV and radio. As if there is no corona, as if nothing is wrong. We want a disclaimer ‘shop in moderation’”, says FNV director Linda Vermeulen.

The trade union has been criticizing Black Friday for some time, which means a lot of extra work pressure for the employees of shops and distribution centers. “The turnover of many large chains is going well. The advertisements and sale parties are therefore not necessary at all,” the union reasons.

Retailers’ organization INretail tried to emphasize recently that the industry does handle the bargain fest responsibly. INretail also said on Friday evening that Black Friday went very smoothly. The organization based this, among other things, on measurements that it had carried out by a research agency.

The industry had also previously sent out a call to stores to spread promotions around the bargain festival over several days as much as possible. In addition, consumers were advised to shop especially at quiet times. But another reason why it was quieter in the shopping streets on Friday is that it rained in large parts of the Netherlands, an INretail spokesperson also said.
