Joe Biden skipped Super Bowl interview because his staff 'don't have much confidence in him' says Clinton campaign guru James Carville: Democrat 'bed-wetting' over president's age spreads

  • The game typically draws more than 100 million
  • Biden turned down the interview for second consecutive year
  • Carville called it a missed opportunity

President Joe Biden’s decision to skip a Super Bowl interview on CBS isn’t just a missed opportunity – it is a sign his staff doesn’t have ‘confidence’ in him to perform, said Democratic campaign operative James Carville.

With an estimated audience of more than 100 million people, the chance to gab about sports and politics for free during an election might seem to be an enticing proposition.

Sunday’s game had had cross demographic hype, with viewers tuning in to see if the Kansas City Chiefs would repeat, amid interest in the off-the-field romance between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.

‘When you don’t accept the Super Bowl interview, you’re – I don’t know – polling averages, you’re three points down in a two-way. It’s the biggest television audience, not even close. And you get a chance to do a 20, 25 minute interview on that day and you don’t do it – that’s some kind of sign that the staff or yourself doesn’t have much confidence in you.’

Democratic strategist James Carville is faulting President Joe Biden for turning down the chance of a traditional Super Bowl interview before an audience of millions

‘There’s no other way to read this. And he’s not going to do debates. He is old,’ Carville continued.

Carville, 79, who helped steer Bill Clinton’s successful 1992 campaign with a relentless focus on the economy, noted that ‘I’m almost as old as he is,’ but had some blunt observations about age.

‘It’s never gonna get better. You know, today is the youngest you’ll ever be for the rest of your life.’

Carville said the entire Democratic infrastructure needs to be told ‘okay, this is what the president’s going to do. This is what he’s not going to do. And to try to work around whatever it is.’

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre got asked once again about Biden’s decision to skip a Super Bowl interview

But he said turning down the Super Bowl interview ‘was telling.’

Then he ripped mores in Washington that have led to a string of Republicans being appointed as special counsels – following special counsel Robert Hur’s bombshell report hitting Biden on his memory recall even while announcing he would not be prosecuted over classified documents.

He also pointed to the trove of Afghanistan documents found to be in his possession that were at the heart of the investigation. ‘I think he’s obsessed with sayin he’s right’ about resisting the effort to pour more U.S. troops into the conflict.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre brushed off questions about the decision to turn down a Super Bowl decision Tuesday, in the run-up to a game that ended up resulting in a dramatic overtime finish.

‘The viewers who tune in — they tune in to watch the game, right? They want to see the game, they want to see their favorite team, they want to see a halftime show. It is that type of tradition, the president will find many other ways to communicate with Americans… when the time is right,’ she said.

That answer came two days before Biden opted to give a sudden press conference after the release of the Hur report where he went after reporters and flubbed when referencing President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt.

Last year’s contest between the Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles drew 115 million viewers, with a lesser number tuning into the pre-game show where the president often appears. He opted to skep a Fox News interview in conjunction with that Super Bowl as well.

Jean-Pierre got another Super Bowl question on Monday, but stood by the White House posture.

‘We’ve talked about this. We believe that it is important, obviously, tradition to watch the Super Bowl. And we think there are different ways to communicate with the American people and we’re going to try and find different ways to meet the American people where they are,’ she said.
