The Super Bowl in Las Vegas that many thought would never happen went off with out a hitch — and in fact was the most-watched TV program ever, with 123.4 million viewers.

A few people bet on the game locally as well. The Nevada Gaming Control Board released the Super Bowl wagering numbers for the state of Nevada on Monday evening, and the state also set a new record with $185.6 million in total dollars wagered over Nevada’s 182 sportsbooks.

The Kansas City Chiefs won 25-22 in overtime as 2-point underdogs against the San Francisco 49ers, and the game stayed under the total of 47.5. The betting public was more heavily invested in the Chiefs to cover (and the Kansas City moneyline), while the larger wagers were on the 49ers.

Sportsbooks won $6.8 million (a 3.7 percent hold), and have now come out ahead against the public in all but two Super Bowls since 1991.

NGCB chairman Kirk Hendrick added in a press release, “The Nevada Gamingh Control Board congratulates and thanks all the stakeholders involved for successfully delivering such a spectacular event from the state of Nevada.”

The biggest prop that sportsbooks lost on was the game going to overtime, which was +900 at some books. Caesars Sportsbook director of trading Craig Mucklow told For The Win, “The YES overtime will be one of the biggest prop payouts since I’ve been here.”

While the average ticket on the prop was only $16 at Caesars, the handle was two-to-one on YES and the ticket count was eight-to-one.

“It was OK,” South Point sportsbook director Chris Andrews told For The Win. “Not great, but a little better win than I expected. Handle up slightly, but I was disappointed. I thought it would be higher. [Travis] Kelce hurt us a little.”

Sportsbooks were also hurt by Travis Kelce going over his receiving yardage prop and receptions total, but helped by him — and other star players outside of Christian McCaffrey — not finding the end zone. The game staying under the total of 47.5 (the number most of the dollars on the total were wagered at) also aided the books’ bottom line on the game.

“Awesome handle and atmosphere and a record handle for Station Casinos,” Station Casinos sportsbook director Chuck Esposito told For The Win in a text. “Overall result was a small winner. Game result, second-half result and OT were all bad.”
