Caleb Ewan a remporté la 1re étape du Tour d’Oman (2.Pro), courue samedi entre Manah et Muscat sur 181,5 kilomètres. Au sprint, le coureur australien de l’équipe Jayco-AlUla a devancé le Français Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) et le Norvégien Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X). Il prend ainsi la tête du classement général. Amaury Capiot (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) a fini 6e de la course, après sa 3e place sur la Muscat Classic vendredi.

Grâce aux bonifications, Ewan compte 4 secondes d’avance sur Coquard. L’échappé Oscar Pelegri est 3e à 5 secondes, dans le même temps que son compagnon d’aventure Polychronis Tzortzakis. Capiot est 8e.

Dans une étape d’ouverture sans réelle difficulté, la course semblait destinée aux sprinteurs. Quatre coureurs ont néanmoins décidé de prendre de l’avance: l’Espagnol Oscar Pelegri (Burgos-BH), le Malaisien Nur Amirul Fakhruddin Mazuki (Terengganu), le Grec Polychronis Tzortzakis (Roojai Insurance) et le local omanais Munther Al Hsani.

Le plateau de coureurs était similaire à celui qui a disputé la Muscat Classic vendredi. Amaury Capiot y avait fini 3e, derrière le vainqueur néo-zélandais Finn Fisher Black (UAE Team Emirates) et l’Américain Luke Lamperti (Soudal Quick-Step).

Le Néerlandais Fabio Jakobsen (dsm-firmenich PostNL), qui avait chuté sur la Muscat Classic, a réclamé de son équipe qu’elle rattrape les échappés pour disputer le sprint et prendre sa revanche. À cet exercice, c’est cependant Ewan qui s’est montré le plus rapide pour décrocher la 61e victoire de sa carrière. Jakobsen a fini 9e.

Une étape vallonnée attend le peloton dimanche avec l’ascension de Qurayyat (2,7 km à 6,7%) en guise d’apothéose. La course se terminera au bout de la 5e étape, mercredi, avec le final à Jabal al Akhdhar (5,8 km à 10,2%). Le vainqueur succédera au palmarès à l’Américain Matteo Jorgenson, vainqueur en 2023 devant Mauri Vansevenant. En 2017, Ben Hermans avait remporté le classement général.
