Am Konstrukteurs-Titel hat sich nichts geändert. Der heißt seit 2014 Mercedes. Die Erfolgsgemeinschaft aus Brackley und Brixworth führte seit 2017 auch regelmäßig die Zuverlässigkeitstabelle an. Kein Auto spulte mehr Rennkilometer ab als die Silberpfeile. Die Defektquote ging stark gegen Null. Die Fahrer waren nahezu fehlerlos.

Das hatte nicht nur damit zu tun, dass Mercedes über weite Strecken unbedrängt an der Spitze cruisen konnte. Mit dem Beginn der Hybrid-Ära zogen in der Chassisfabrik und der Motorenschmiede auch eine neue Qualitätssicherung ein, die intern unter dem Motto “Right first time” ins Leben gerufen wurde.

In dieser Saison steht Mercedes in der Liste der zurückgelegten Rennkilometer nur an sechster Stelle. Lewis Hamilton und Valtteri Bottas spulten 2.403 von 2.594 möglichen Runden ab. Das entspricht 92,6 Prozent der Gesamtdistanz. Kein schlechter Wert, und doch ging es in der Vergangenheit besser. 2017 mit 98,6, 2019 mit 97,2, 2019 mit 98,7 und 2020 mit 97,9 Prozent.

Der Absturz des Marken-Weltmeisters hat nichts mit mangelnder Standfestigkeit zu tun. Die Motorenprobleme beschränkten sich auf die Trainingstage. Bottas brauchte sechs von drei erlaubten Einheiten, Hamilton fünf.

Im Rennen gab es nur zwei Defekte, und die waren auch nur halbe. Beim Boxenstopp von Bottas in Monte Carlo wollte sich die Radmutter nicht abnehmen lassen. Sie wurde erst Tage später in der Fabrik mit schwerem Gerät gelöst. In Katar nahm Mercedes Bottas freiwillig aus dem Rennen. Ein Reifenschaden hatte dem Unterboden und den Leitblechen zu großen Schaden zugefügt.

Drei der fünf Ausfälle gehen auf Unfälle zurück. Bottas löste in Ungarn eine Startkollision aus, der gleich fünf Autos zum Opfer fielen. Am Crash mit George Russell in Imola traf ihn nur eine Teilschuld. Und dann war da noch die Karambolage zwischen Max Verstappen und Lewis Hamilton in Monza. Im Titelrennen wurde gehobelt. Logisch, dass da auch Späne fielen.

Red Bull beklagte gleich fünf Unfälle. Verstappen zog zwei Mal gegen Hamilton den Kürzeren. Ein Mal warf ihn ein Reifenplatzer unsanft aus dem Rennen. Sergio Perez war bei seinen Unfällen in Budapest und Jeddah jeweils Opfer.

Technisch kam Red Bull überraschend gut durch die Saison. Nur ein Mal gab es Alarm. Perez musste im Finale in Abu Dhabi mit einem todkranken Motor aufgeben. Weil sich viele der Unfälle zu Beginn der Rennen abspielten, steht Red Bull nach Rennrunden einen Platz schlechter da als Mercedes. 2.397 Runden bedeuten eine Quote von 92,4 Prozent.

Von neun über drei auf eins

Eine sichere Bank dagegen waren die Dinos McLaren und Ferrari. 2019 rangierte McLaren noch auf Rang neun in der Zuverlässigkeits-Rangliste. In der Saison 2020 zeigte sich schon der frische Wind, der mit Teamchef Andreas Seidl durch die Hallen von Woking wehte. McLaren verbesserte sich auf Rang drei. In der abgelaufenen Saison steht der WM-Vierte an erster Stelle, und dabei hatte man sein eigenes WM-Duell gegen Ferrari auszufechten.

Mit 2.490 Rennrunden und 12.368 Kilometern legten Daniel Ricciardo und Lando Norris die größte Distanz zurück. Sie kamen mit 96 Prozent der Perfektion am nächsten. Nur zwei Mal musste ein McLaren-Fahrer vor der Zielflagge aufgeben. Norris stieg in Budapest schon nach zwei Runden aus. Sein Unterboden war nach der Rempelei beim Start zu stark ramponiert. Ricciardo parkte in Brasilien nach 46 von 71 Runden in der Garage. Sein Mercedes-Motor spielte nicht mehr mit.

Dicht hinter McLaren behauptete sich Ferrari. Der zweite Platz ist ein weiterer Beleg dafür, dass es mit der Traditionsmarke wieder aufwärts geht. Die 2.439 Runden und 12.225 Kilometer verlangen ein Fußnote. Ferrari verpasste einen Start. Charles Leclerc musste in Monte Carlo seine Pole Position räumen, weil auf der Fahrt zum Startplatz eine Radnabe brach. Es war ein Folgeschaden seines Unfalls in der Qualifikation. Dafür gab es nicht einen einzigen Defekt. Und nur einen weiteren Ausfall. Leclerc wurde beim Start in Budapest von Lance Stroll abgeräumt. Dabei ging auch der Motor kaputt.

Dritter auf dem Podium ist Alfa Romeo. Die Eidgenossen hätten sich bei zwei Defekten und zwei Unfällen vielleicht den ein oder anderen Ausfall mehr gewünscht, wenn es dafür etwas mehr WM-Punkte gegeben hätte. Doch die Schweizer Wertarbeit hat Methode. In den Jahren 2019 und 2020 landete der Rennstall aus Hinwil in dieser Wertung jeweils auf dem zweiten Platz.
