Naomi Watts keeps warm in red overcoat on set of her new drama film The Friend in NYC alongside her massive Great Dane co-star

Naomi Watts hit the bustling streets of New York City once again alongside her four-legged co-star, Bing the Great Dane, on the set of the film The Friend.

The two-time Oscar-nominated actress, 55, was seen all bundled up while walking the massive dog in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Downtown Manhattan.

Watts stopped to pose with her castmate dressed in a red overcoat that covered most of her 5ft2in figure

It appears the film’s costume department had her in black pants and a multi-colored scarf that wrapped around her neck and tucked inside the jacket.

Considering the temperatures have been hovering between the mid-40s and 50s Fahrenheit, Watts also wore black leather gloves and a gray beanie cap over her blonde tresses that fell out of the hat a few inches past her shoulders.

With a large purse over her right shoulder, Watts has been spotted shooting scenes in the area with the huge pooch, who plays Apollo, by her side the last couple of days.

Written, produced and directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, The Friend is a film adaption of Sigrid Nunez’s 2018 novel of the same name, which won the U.S.’s National Book Award For Fiction, about a woman’s bond with her Great Dane.

The story follows a writer who adopts a heartbroken Great Dane that had belonged to a now deceased friend and mentor, according to Deadline.

Both the book and the drama film tackle elements of love and friendship, along with the grief and ultimate healing they share while establishing their relationship.

Nunez was inspired to write the novel in part due to acquaintances and friends convinced their lives would end by suicide, according to Wikipedia. In fact, a friend of Nunez’s died by suicide as she was writing The Friend.

As for the film production side, this is the eighth time the long-standing writing-directing partnership of McGehee and Siegel have teamed up for a feature movie.

They first came together to collaborate on the thriller Suture (1994) that included a cast of Dennis Haysbert, Mel Harris, Sab Shimono, Dina Merrill and David Graf.

Their most recent writer, producer and director collaboration was for the drama film Montana Story, starring Haley Lu Richardson, Owen Teague, Gilbert Owuor, Kimberly Guerrero, Eugene Brave Rock and Asivak Koostachin.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in late January, Watts shared some details about her experience starring alongside a 150 pound dog.

‘It’s not often that a dog has the starring role,’ she said, before adding, ‘He’s a special dog. Very lovable. He’s a good dog.’

The Shoreham, Kent, England native, who also spent part of her childhood in Sydney, Australia, shared how she works with a trainer on set at all times.

‘I have to have all kinds of doggy trainings,’ she explained. ‘You know, every 20 minutes, we have to go through all of these — these tricks. He can do a lot of things.’

As the production for The Friend continues on in New York City, there’s still no official word on a premiere date just yet.
