The start of the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) era has brought a range of mixed emotions for a lot of fans. Some love it, and some hate it.
There are some pros and cons to having NIL in the sport. One of the cons is all of the tampering that is allegedly happening across the sport. But there are also many opportunities for players to give back to their community.
Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel is showing how NIL can be used to help a community. He held an event on Friday at his high school alma mater, Mililani High School, where he used his NIL money to donate new uniforms to the team once again. Something he did when he was enrolled at Oklahoma as well.
According to an article by 247Sports, Gabriel teamed up with major brands like Nike, VICIS, Riddell, and Raising Cane’s to make the event happen. He hopes this will inspire the next era of the school’s athletes.
But he’s not done there. He told the publication what he plans to do next.
“The weight room is coming, the training room is coming, the branding around the school is coming,” Gabriel told 247Sports. “I think the biggest thing is how do we provide next-level resources so they are able to compete at their best. How do you expect somebody to play at their best if they don’t have the best resources?”
Stories like Gabriel’s show that even if you are skeptical about NIL, good can come from it.
