The 70 debuted in 1984 as a spin-off to the standard model, with a focus on further upgrading the Land Cruiser’s heavy-duty credentials to make it better suited for commercial use while improving its off-road ability.

This revived model will go on sale alongside the 300 and the new, head-turning 250 in its home market. At least that one’s coming to Europe: it’s due here in 2024.

Toyota reckons it can shift 400 examples a month by following a similar blueprint to before, but with a number of powertrain, handling and safety upgrades in addition to a slightly revamped design.

Drive is provided by a 2.8-litre direct-injection turbo diesel engine that’s good for 201bhp and 369lb ft of torque, which is then distributed to all four wheels through a six-speed ‘Flex Lock-up Super Intelligent’ automatic transmission. Toyota also quotes a weight of around 2,300kg (similar to a Land Rover Discovery).

The new 70 also comes with an armada of driving systems on board, including Active Traction Control and Vehicle Stability Control. These have been paired with the various safety systems that can be accessed through Toyota’s Safety Sense suite.

The price for all this retro goodness? A smudge over £25,700. Not that anyone will be exchanging any Sterling for one, mind.
