Shalulile: How many goals does he need to set new PSL record?

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile is slowly edging closer to a PSL record of most goals scored by an individual since 1996.

On Wednesday, Shalulile scored his 110th goal in the South African topflight as Sundowns beat SuperSport United 2-0 in the Tshwane derby.

In doing so, Shalulile equalled Daniel Mudau and Mabhuti Khenyeza in the league’s all-time goalscoring charts.

Only Siyabonga Nomvethe (123) has scored more goals than Shalulile in the PSL era, but that long-standing record is on the brink of being broken.

What’s interesting is that it took Shalulile just under eight years to break the records set by Mudau and Khenyeza.

HOW MANY MORE GOALS DOES SHALULILE NEED TO BREAK NOMVETHE’S RECORD?

Currently on 110 goals, Shalulile needs just 13 goals to break Nomvethe’s PSL record for most goals by a striker.

Now, for him to become the new PSL king in terms of the number of goals scored, the Namibia international requires 14 more goals to move to 124.

And given the number of games Sundowns still have to play, Shalulile could easily break and set a new record this season provided he remains injury free.

BREAKING DOWN SHALULILE’S 110 GOALS

Shalulile arrived in South Africa exactly eight years ago as a relatively unknown striker from Namibia to play for Highlands Park.

When Highlands Park gained promotion to the DStv Premiership, Shalulile contributed 27 goals across all competitions before moving to Sundowns.

He has, so far, scored a whopping 83 goals since his arrival at Chloorkop – and he continues to be their most trusted striker.
