On Nov. 13, 2023, the first Iowa high school wrestling practices of the season took place.
Now, a little over three months later, the Iowa state boys wrestling tournament kicks off at Wells Fargo Arena. In that time, some athletes wrestled in upwards of 40 bouts. That’s about three matches a week, not including the winter break and delays due to inclement weather.

Thirty-four total wrestlers enter the tournament with undefeated records in the 2023-24 season, including Osage senior Tucker Stangel (50-0) and Fort Dodge sophomore superstar Dreshaun Ross (43-0).

At the end of four action-packed days, 42 individual state champions – one each in 14 weight class across Class 3A, 2A and 1A – will be crowned and three team titles will be won.
The first day of the state wrestling tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14.

9:20 a.m. — Eight advance at 113 pounds in 2A
The Class 2A 113-pound first round is complete.
Jayden Mara (Waukon), Jayce Curry (Sergeant Bluff-Luton), Kaliber Fry (PCM), Jesse Jens (Harlan), Austin Hansen (Estherville Lincoln Central), Evan Erpenbach (West Lyon), Jon Gonzalez (West Marshall), and Lane Travis (Creston) all move on to the next round.
9:15 a.m. — And just like that, the first round at 106-pounds is complete
The Class 2A first round at 106 pounds is complete.
Gavin Knutson (Decorah), Kaleb Feld (Garner-Hayfield/Ventura), Quinn Arellano (Van Meter), Colt Boyles (Burlington Notre Dame), Charlie Boelman (North Polk), Bryce Oostenink (Sioux Center), Tucker Ball (Davis County), and Brody Black (Glenwood) all advance.
9:00 a.m. — It’s go time at Wells Fargo Arena
Day 1 of the Iowa state wrestling tournament has officially begun with the Class 2A 106-pound first round at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

- 9:00 a.m. – Session 1 – Class 2A, First Round, Consolations
- 1:30 p.m. – Session 2 – Class 3A, First Round, Consolations
