England manager Gareth Southgate was seen at Aston Villa on Sunday

England manager and former Aston Villa player Gareth Southgate was the subject of boos from the Villa Park crowd during Sunday’s 2-1 defeat against Manchester United.

The Three Lions head coach was in attendance for the penultimate match of the weekend as he kept tabs on possible selection options for next month’s internationals. England have two friendlies in March as they take on Brazil and Belgium at Wembley.

Despite making 243 appearances for Villa between 1995 and 2001, his reception was memorable but for the wrong reasons. Southgate appeared on the big screen at Villa Park but fans were quick to jeer the 53-year-old before they quicky changed the footage back to the club crest.

On the pitch, there was plenty of English talent for the head coach to monitor. The Red Devils had the likes of Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo on show in their starting XI.

Ollie Watkins and Jacob Ramsey were showed their credentials for an international call-up. Villa’s top goalscorer has featured in the last two of Southgate’s squads to add to his list of international caps, scoring in the 1-0 win over Australia in October.

Speaking ahead of the camp, the England boss dismissed ‘bias’ against the Villa goalgetter. He said: “Ollie has started the season well.

“He has hit a bit of scoring form over the past couple of weeks. You have to be careful with that because you can’t just go on recent bias when you’re looking at selection. He is in good form and coming in on a high.

“He’s been with us before, we know his character, his personality. He’s a good guy around the group. His team are playing well, he is playing for a team who are really well coached and the team are in a good moment.”
