The Accountant was an incredibly successful 2016 action thriller starring Ben Affleck, even prompting a sequel announcement the next year, but it was stuck in development purgatory for a long time. Now, however, the much-anticipated follow-up is in the works and actress Daniella Pineda is the latest star to join the cast.
Per Deadline, the Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom actress, who played Zia Rodriguez, a member of the Dinosaur Protection Group, has signed on to appear in The Accountant 2. She has recently appeared in the Cowboy Bebop live-action adaptation as Faye Valentine, a dishonest and bold criminal who joins the Bebop crew. She also reprised her Jurassic World role in 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion. Pineda has also done plenty of television work including The CW’s The Originals and Tales of the Walking Dead.

A Star-Studded Cast Is Assembled for The Accountant 2
The Jurassic alumnus is the most recent addition to the cast, which includes some big hitters. Affleck, J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, and Cynthia Addai-Robinson will reprise their roles from the first film. Affleck played the titular accountant, Christian Wolff, who specializes in sanitizing criminal accounting books. Simmons plays US Treasury agent Ray King, who is after Wolff, while Bernthal plays Brax, Christian’s brother. Addai-Robinson plays a junior Treasury agent, Marybeth Medina. The screenwriter and director for the first film, Bill Dubuque and David O’Connor, will also return for the sequel in their respective roles.
The Accountant followed Wolff, a CPA (Certified Public Accountant) with autism and a secret double life. During the day he excelled at his regular job, but he spent his off hours mingling with the criminal underworld, crunching their numbers. When he uncovers a conspiracy in the books of a robotics company, Wolff must dig into it, while evading both the law and his criminal associations. The film did moderately well at box-office success, grossing over $150 million on a $44 million budget, but it hit its real financial stride in digital. The Accountant was far and away the most rented film of 2017.

The first official synopsis for The Accountant 2 reads as follows: “When Medina’s former boss is killed by unknown assassins, she’s forced to contact Christian to solve the murder. With the help of his estranged but highly lethal brother Brax, Chris applies his brilliant mind and less-than-legal methods to piece together the unsolved puzzle. As they get closer to the truth, the trio draw the attention of some of the most ruthless killers alive — all intent on putting a stop to their search.”

Back in 2021, O’Connor, the first film’s director, told CinemaBlend that not only was there a second film in development, but that they were working on a third film. Whether or not that pans out will likely depend on the upcoming release’s success, but an Accountant trilogy would surely be exciting.
There is no set release date for The Accountant 2, but the first film is streaming on Netflix.
