Here are three under-the-radar WR trade prospects for Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers still need to add a wide receiver to their roster after trading Diontae Johnson to the Panthers earlier this offseason.

Pittsburgh has been the subject of several trade rumors for veteran wide receivers, such as the 49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk, but nothing has come of them. That’s why most believe the team will address the position in the 2024 NFL Draft at this point.

However, NFL insider Jason La Canfora believes the Steelers are still assessing their options in the trade market.

“It would not surprise me if they did that tomorrow, if they did it the Wednesday before the draft, if they did it while they were on the clock, if they did it in the run up to the draft that Thursday,” La Canfora said on the “In The Huddle” podcast. “I know that they’re really trying to make something happen there.”

If that’s the case, here are three under-the-radar wide receivers Pittsburgh could be targeting.

Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton

There’s no denying the connection between Sutton and new Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson. The two played in Denver together the past two years and showcased their connection by combining for 10 touchdowns in 2023.

The Broncos are clearly in a rebuild and will take any extra draft capital they can to help their efforts. The 28-year-old would likely cost a Day Three pick with a $17 million cap hit in 2024, though General Manager Omar Khan could likely work some magic and bring that number down.

Patriots wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster

Would Pittsburgh be interested in reuniting with its former second-round pick in 2017?

Smith-Schuster’s exit from the Steel City wasn’t ideal as he was highly criticized for his activity on social media, but a couple of stints with the Chiefs and Patriots have given him some time to mature.

There are some medical issues for the 27-year-old after playing in just 11 games last season, but if the Steelers feel good about him, it might be worth the risk. Smith-Schuster’s play was never in question as a physical blocker with sure-hands. He could be the perfect complement to wide receiver George Pickens.

Texans wide receiver John Metchie III

If Pittsburgh wants to go for a lesser-known name with some more upside, Metchie III could be the guy.

The former second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft seems to be lost on the Texans’ depth chart after they traded for four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

Metchie III didn’t play his rookie year after being diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia. However, he returned to the field in 2023, posting 16 catches for 158 yards.

Those numbers don’t jump off the screen, but the 23-year-old may bring the upside and cheap price the Steelers are looking for.
