Fans of Today FM have been saddened to hear the news that after 24 years on air, Phil Cawley has chosen to leave the station.
Phil announced the news of his departure on his Sunday evening show, thanking all those who made his years with the station some of his best.
As he announced the news to his loyal listeners, Phil explained that although he had planned to hang up his microphone sooner, he decided to stay when the pandemic kicked in. However, the time has finally come for him to say goodbye.
Many fans of the esteemed broadcaster took to social media to share their disappointment that the legendary presenter would no longer be on their radio. They also commended him on all his work over the years.
Writing on Twitter, RTÉ radio presenter Will Leahy said: ‘Good luck to @PhilCawley who’s leaving Today FM after 24 years. One of radio’s true gents – very rare for someone to be on the same station for such a long stint. Here’s to the next chapter bud.’
Phil’s Today FM co-worker Ed Smith also shared some touching words describing Phil as a ‘brilliant jock’ who has a ‘gorgeous connection’ with his audiences.
‘A serious radio salute to the legendary @PhilCawley who is finishing up @TodayFM this afternoon,’ Ed tweeted. ‘A brilliant jock who always had such a gorgeous connection with his listeners. His place in the Today FM Hall Of Fame is assured. Good luck Phil. You did the station some service.’
Will and Ed’s sentiment’s were echoed all round with many people saying they will miss ‘gentleman’ Phil on their radio.
Speaking on his last show, Phil told a sweet story about how he has Today FM to thank for for helping him meet his partner of 13 years.
The radio host was working on an outside broadcast 13 year ago in on Inishbofin island when he ‘fell in love’ with a ‘Kiwi girl’.
Explaining what happened he said: ‘Thanks to Today FM, I met a young Kiwi girl whose phone number I lost, but pursued her for six months and the rest is history.’Internet Explorer Channel Network
