Team Ninja has unveiled new details for Rise of the Ronin, including a character creator and up to 4-player online cooperative gameplay. The developer also provided insight into the Rise of the Ronin mechanics, character interactions, and combat, all within a recent behind-the-scenes video.
Rise of the Ronin is an upcoming action-role-playing game set in the tumultuous Bakumatsu era of late 19th-century Japan, slated for release on March 22, 2024, exclusively for PlayStation 5. Developed by Koei Tecmo’s Team Ninja, the game immerses players in the conflict between the Tokugawa Shogunate and anti-shogunate factions during the Boshin War. Players can forge their path, making pivotal decisions that shape alliances and outcomes while exploring historically rich environments like Yokohama, Kyoto, and Edo. The game promises to challenge traditional gameplay norms with its combat system, open-world design, and emphasis on nuanced non-player characters.

One of the standout features, unveiled in the FAQ section of the game’s PSN store page, is Rise of the Ronin’s support for up to 4 players in online co-op mode during the main story missions. Another significant revelation is the character creator showcased in a behind-the-scenes video, enabling players to craft their unique warrior to traverse Rise of the Ronin’s feudal Japan open world. It’s important to note that a PlayStation Plus membership will be required to access the online co-op feature. Additionally, the developers emphasized that Rise of the Ronin will not feature player-versus-player (PvP) combat, focusing instead on cooperative gameplay and narrative-driven experiences.
Rise of the Ronin Behind-The-Scenes Video
According to the Game Producer and Director Fumihiko Yasuda, “action remains at the core of Rise of the Ronin.” One of the key challenges faced by the development team was integrating ranged attacks with close combat seamlessly. However, the director assured this was successfully achieved, even affirming that the game is completely original.

The Developer also explained how players will have the ability to switch between characters, each with their unique abilities and playstyles. In addition, the introduction of AI companions with bond levels adds depth to the gameplay and character interactions, allowing players to form alliances or rivalries with various characters they encounter throughout their journey. These relationships will influence combat techniques and strategies, offering players a myriad of tactical options in battle, thus incorporating elements that players had hoped to see in Rise Of The Ronin.
Commentary from players reflects a sense of excitement and anticipation for Rise of the Ronin’s release date. With its gameplay mechanics, cooperative multiplayer mode, and storytelling, Rise of the Ronin promises to offer an interesting experience for action RPG game fans.
