Thunderstorms that blighted bank holiday weekend replaced with sun

The thunderstorms and heavy showers that blighted the UK over the bank holiday weekend will be replaced by sunny spells and warm temperatures over the next few days.

Tuesday will be sunny all day for many parts of the UK and after some showers have eased, it is likely to remain dry in most areas.

Temperatures are set to rise throughout the week and the weather will turn increasingly warm,  although some parts of northern Scotland could continue to experience showers and rain.

Ellie Glaisyer, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said: ‘It will generally be a lot more settled this week.

‘It will start to feel much more pleasant with temperatures on Tuesday likely to reach the very early twenties in the south, and then later on in the week, we could see temperatures of around 22C to 23C, while the north is likely to reach temperatures in the high teens.’

Although the Bank Holiday weekend is over, many will be able to enjoy the sunny spells and much warmer temperatures moving into next week

Ms Glaisyer said an area of high pressure will start to build and move across the UK from Wednesday onwards, potentially bringing more settled, warmer, and drier weather.

The bank holiday weekend saw the UK experience a mix of rain and sunny spells.

The Met Office issued yellow weather warnings for parts of England, Wales, and southern Scotland on Monday, as it warned that thunderstorms and heavy downpours could cause flooding and travel disruption.

While the showers began to let up on Monday evening, nine flood warnings and 57 alerts remained in place on the Environment Agency website.

Tuesday’s forecast for sunnier days is a contrast to the rainy weekend which saw flood warning issued for part of England

Some areas in the UK suffered from downpours and weren’t able to make the most of the extra day off work

It said local flooding from surface water and rivers was ‘possible but not expected’ across parts of south-east England and London, while local flooding from surface water was ‘possible in other parts of England’ from ‘isolated, heavy thundery showers’.

The sunny weather to come will be a relief to most Brits who had to battle thunderstorms and rain over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The Met Office activated two urgent ‘danger to life’ thunderstorm warnings as some areas faced more than an inch of rain in just one hour.

The UK endured a washout Bank Holiday Monday with the South East bearing the brunt of the rain amid downpours in London for the whole day.
