Suspect in murder of NBC anchor’s mother was her tenant who had stopped paying rent: police

A man wanted in connection with the killing of Connecticut new anchor Heidi Voight’s mother was arrested Wednesday, authorities said.

Shawn Conlon, 44, was taken into custody Wednesday morning at a hotel in Groton by the US Marshals Service in conjunction with the Rhode Island State Police and the Groton Police Department, the Vermont State Police announced.

He will be arraigned in Connecticut before he is extradited back to Vermont, where he will face second-degree homicide charges for the death of Claudia Voight, 73, of Windham, the authorities explained.

The victim’s daughter, NBC Connecticut anchor Heidi Voight, announced in August that her family was “carrying a painful secret” regarding her mother, who died in February.

“My mother’s death was not natural, nor peaceful. My mother was murdered, violently, in the place she should have felt safest,” Voight wrote of the painful loss.

“Our silence was necessary to protect the early stages of the intense criminal investigation,” she explained.

Just a few hours after Conlon’s arrest was made public, Voight wrote “HALLELUJAH” on her Facebook page.

Claudia Voight was found dead in her home on Feb. 20, the Vermont State Police said.

Investigators initially thought she suffered a medical event, but an autopsy later revealed that she actually succumbed to neck compression and “the manner of death was homicide,” they added.

“State police believe the killing of Ms. Voight was not random, and there is no identified threat to the community,” the Vermont authorities said in late July.

Conlon – who is originally from Rhode Island – rented a room in Claudia Voight’s home and stopped paying rent in late 2022, but continued to live there until her death, Vermont police said Wednesday.

The Vermont State Police obtained an arrest warrant for Conlon on Monday, and worked with the US Marshal Service to track him to Connecticut, the statement read.

During his initial court appearance after his arrest, Conlin was ordered held for $1 million bail on a fugitive charge, the authorities added.

He waived extradition and is being held by the Groton Police pending his transfer to Vermont.

Tha arrest warrant for the second-degree murder charge orders Conlon to be held without bail.

Heidi Voight, 41, appears on NBC Connecticut on weekday morning, according to her professional bio.

The anchor did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for a comment on Conlon’s arrest.
