This is why Simone Kleinsma was disappointed with every new season of Maestro

“I was always a bit grumpy when the program started again, I thought, ‘Damn, they didn’t ask me again!’” she tells. BuzzE. When the request came this year, it was a resounding yes, laughs Kleinsma. “I’ve seen the program a lot myself, I’m really a fan.” She is very fond of classical music, she says. She got this from her parents, who often put on that music. She thinks this program will introduce more people to classical music. “Who knows, those people might suddenly put on a classic record after this and think, that’s nice.”

Learning to conduct also really appealed to her. “I sometimes asked an orchestra for fun if I could stand in front of it for a while. Everyone thought that was hilarious, so the orchestra joined in. It only happened a few times, but that was a moment of pure excitement.”

She thinks it’s great that you really learn something from ‘this craft’ in the program. “Because that’s what it really is, a craft.” Not that she now masters the profession, she emphasizes. “If we get a high mark from the jury, it’s because we’ve made strides.” Because real conductors have practiced and learned for years, while all of them have no experience in this yet. “I have an incredible amount of respect for conductors. It really comes down to very small things.”

Conducting is a kind of performance, says Kleinsma, but this is a completely different art. “I have been involved with music all my life and I think I can say that I am a bit musical. But this is such a different discipline.” The collaboration between the orchestra and the conductor is very important, she learned. “The building collapses. But when things go well, it really is a euphoric feeling.”

The group, which also consists of radio DJ Bram Krikke and cabaret artist Plien van Bennekom, clicks very well with each other, says the actress. Although the feeling of mutual competition creeps in when you start. Kleinsma does not have the ambition to continue conducting after Maestro. “No, no,” she laughs. “This is for the program. I think it’s fantastic to do, but that’s what the real pros have to do.”
